I am trying something different when it comes to writing retreats this year. Since I am currently unable to travel, I am enjoying at-home writing retreats this summer—sort of like a staycation for authors and writers.

I had my first mini writing retreat a few weeks ago. I was joined by my great-niece and nephew, ages 11 and 8, who were visiting from Maryland. The retreat latest two hours. That was always the plan because I really did not expect two young people so full of energy to sit much longer. We spent much of the time helping my niece work on her plot outline for a thriller she is writing. I never occurred to me that eight and eleven-year-olds would know about MI6! My nephew creates graphic novels. We got plenty of laughs from the pictures he drew. And me, I got a wee bit of outlining done on my work-in-progress.

Of course, there had to be snacks. My offerings included apple cider donut bread and strawberries. Lemonade was the beverage of choice all around. And when the two hours were up, my nephew went off to the skate park with his friends. My niece and I went out to lunch at the local Thai restaurant. Then it was back to grandmother’s house where another cousin awaited for some good old playtime.

Next Up

The real test of my DIY writing retreats will come in a few weeks when a couple of members from my online critique group fly up to spend four glorious days of writing together. This one will require more thought as there will be many more meals to plan and prepare, and maybe an outing or two.

The plan is we will sit out on my deck writing (provided the weather is good) and enjoy the marvelous view. I suspect we will have some wonderful conversations, one of which I already know will revolve around crafting a villainous character. One of my favorite things!

In addition, there will be lots of good food and drinks. And fellowship—laughter and connection that feeds the soul.

What I am hoping for myself is that the words will really flow on my work-in-progress. This has been a book I have put off writing for a couple of years because the concept is difficult and the plot has taken a long time to solidify in my mind. But as the ideas are coming together, my fingers are itching to write. And what better way to do it than surrounded by fellow writers and in an inspirational place to write?

So if you have any suggestions on how to make this a retreat to remember, bring them on. I am listening.
