In 2024, I wrote five Historical Romances. 2025 is no slouch either, but mostly because I’m seeing the publication of some of those books.
Historical Romance in the Alps
February 6th marks the debut of Book Three in The Ladies Alpine Society journey with Into the Breach with You. Starring ADHD-coded heroine Justine “Bad News” Brewer and the newly introduced Bavarian climbing guide Karl Vogel, this novel is the most action-packed of the series. Justine is not one to step away from a challenge, and her time in the Alps is marked by physical challenges. By focusing on her mountaineering endurance, Justine keeps her burgeoning respect and admiration for Karl at bay. I loved writing this book, mostly because Justine is a character who does whatever comes into her mind next and speaks without thinking. While a disaster in formal society, she is excellent in a crisis. You can preorder this book on Amazon right now for only ninety-nine pennies. Or whatever denomination you’d like to use.
Then in April, we will see the culmination of The Ladies Alpine Society with the release of Into the Sky with You. Finally, we get the interiority of the leader of this group of women, Ophelia. She is the one with the ambition, the drive, and the single-mindedness that created the expedition in the first place. And we meet her love interest, an old friend of her father’s, back from South America, where he had been taking measurements for the first topographical maps.
For this book, I got interested in the Royal Geographical Society. It was a group of Englishmen who supported one another on exploration, navigation, and feats of the unknown. They sponsored climbers, explorers, and indeed, map-makers. The history of topographical maps was interesting to learn about, and while I don’t spend too much time on it in the fiction, I hope I did enough to make it interesting! One of the aspects I love about historical romance is the way I get to weave my research into happily-ever-afters.
Paper Lantern Writers Publication
That series concluded, I’ll turn my focus to our Paper Lantern Writers non-fiction debut, Crafting Stories from the Past: A How-To Guide for Writing Historical Fiction. I have three chapters in there, one delving into my love of office supplies (How to Organize Extensive Research), one touching on my romance writing (How to Write A Historical Sex Scene), and one on a deep passion of mine (How to Embrace Diversity in Historical Fiction).
I’ve read all the chapters, and I have to say that I am exceedingly proud of our compilation. Engaging, helpful, and insightful, this craft book is great for any writer of any experience level.
With those publications locked in early in the year, I am also appearing at five—maybe six?—conferences this year. Whew! It’s a year of showing up. I still have historical romance projects in the works, too! I’m not ready to talk about those, but expect another blog when I do!
What is on your 2025 agenda?
