Link List: Gay Subculture of Regency England

MY THIRD BOOK, A LADY’S FINDER, IS COMING OUT ON MARCH 1, AND TO CELEBRATE, I WANTED TO SHARE SOME OF MY INTERNET RESEARCH GEMS.

Researching this book had me going in so many different directions, and I loved it. First, I needed to dive deeper in to the queer subculture of London—a very rich, deep pool. There was so much that I didn’t include because it didn’t fit into my book. The slang, for instance, that was specific to gay men.

As my character, Lady Agnes, would know nothing of that subculture, and my other character, a non-binary house boy of the molly-house, wouldn’t speak it to her, the special slang called Polari would not fit into my book. I know, so disappointing. But there was still plenty to read! Most of my resources I got from print books, but the internet was still so very helpful! Here were some of my more interesting links:

GENERAL GAY SUBCULTURE

From Rictor Norton, an incredibly generous fount of knowledge:

MOLLY-HOUSES (OLD TERM FOR A GAY CLUB, MORE OR LESS)

This resource from Rictor Norton from his work The Georgian Underworld is particularly illuminating about the nature of molly-houses, drag queens, and the law:
