The second installment of The Ladies Alpine Society, In the Money with You is out this week!
This historical romance is set during the Victorian era, and this series is definitely meant to be read in order. Here, we have Prudence, the only American, and the only widow of the bunch. She is an outsider in so many ways, but in true Minnesotan fashion, she soldiers on with a smile on her face…which her British companions find most disconcerting.
If you happened to pick up the Paper Lantern Writers Anthology Destiny Comes Due, which published last Friday, you may have encountered Prudence’s backstory: her elder husband, her brilliant analytic mind paired with a sympathetic and kind heart. And when you pick up In the Money With You, you’ll see her wanting more. She’s older, independently wealthy, and ready to find love–for the first time. Not good marriage material, but she doesn’t want or need that. She wants heart-pounding, sweat-inducing, common sense-melting love.
In fact, in the winter season, as they wait for the calendar to turn for their run at the Matterhorn, the Ladies Alpine Society needs to raise the rest of the money for their Alpine adventure. They assign a charity ball plan to Prudence, and pair her with the expedition accountant, Leo Moon.
After one look at Prudence, Leo is a mess.
One of the things I enjoyed about writing this book are the fact that I didn’t need to do a large amount of research for this one.
I had already researched the period, and researching charity balls was no hardship. It gave me room in the process to focus on the characters, and the way in which money shaped them. We don’t wish to be so crass, but money trauma is real. And Leo Moon grew up so poor, he can’t bear the thought of having to live through it again. So he builds walls around himself and his mother, keeping them safe, hunkering down, just in case. But when Prudence walks through the door, she sees through his camouflage. They engage in a clandestine relationship, which brings Leo’s past out of the woodwork.
This novel is about family reconciliation, and second chances. But it also includes a holiday decorating montage, an extravagant costume ball, a devilishly charming school pal nicknamed Eyeball, and an old lady who has been written off, but can handle herself just fine, thank you very much, and you get In the Money With You.
In the Money With You should be a delightful holiday companion, and a wee escape from the stresses of the season. I hope you enjoy.
From the back cover:
Prudence Cabot sailed to Europe to find a lover.
As an American widow flush with cash, she has hopes of finding the burning, passionate love she never experienced in her marriage. But instead, she found The Ladies Alpine Society, and is now pressed into planning a fundraising ball with the expedition’s accountant, Leo Moon. Prudence feels out of her depth, but glad to have a partner-in-crime to help her navigate British culture. But the taciturn Mr. Moon doesn’t like her—or does he like her too much?
One look and she saw right through him.
Leo Moon is not his real name. He has spent most of his life building his wealth, protecting his mother, hiding in plain sight. But in walks Prudence, and his secrets are laid bare. When he overhears her talking about wanting a lover, he offers his services. After all, they’ve been charged with planning a ridiculous party, so they have an excuse to call on one another. But as they keep their burning-hot secret, Leo’s past waltzes into London, and Leo is forced to choose.
His safety or her love?
