A war-weary knight seeks peace. When his homeland is invaded, can he find a way to save his family and oust the enemy from the Island?
1461, Isle of Jersey. Disillusioned by war, Sir Philippe de Carteret returns home to hang up his sword and embrace his duties as seigneur of the island’s most powerful manor. Desiring to raise his son in peace and safety, he is dismayed when news arrives that the impregnable fortress of Mont Orgueil Castle has been breached.
He seeks assistance from England to expel the invaders. But amid the chaos of the Wars of the Roses, his pleas go unheeded. To safeguard his son and preserve the family legacy, de Carteret pledges fealty to the new lord. Hopeful that the French will rule benevolently, his illusions are quickly shattered when their tactics turn brutal.
With spies everywhere and unsure of whom to trust, can de Carteret build a rebel force and lead them on a quest to liberate the homeland he loves?

Wow! What an exciting portrayal of an amazing historical era! C.V. Lee did her homework with her exceptional debut novel. Rather than just another story about royalty, she concentrated on the average folks who toil and love and live extraordinary lives in their own right. The story overflowed with romance, intrigue, and details that bring readers into the story–the fashion, food, and holidays. C.V. Lee’s deft writing brought me right to the manor house, the prison, the storms at sea–so much excitement! This book provides thrills, deep sighs, and keeps readers holding their breath right to the last exciting page.
This is an excellent, well-researched debut novel. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series! ~M.P. Smith
When the 15th-century War of the Roses spills over to Jersey, the conflicts, betrayals, secrets, and heroism seems more concentrated, more personal because all takes place on the island. That’s what makes C.V. Lee’s Token of Betrayal so compelling. No one—from Sir Philippe de Carteret and his efforts to free the island from the French to the maiden who serves as his only son’s tutor—is unaffected. Lee immerses us, viscerally, in time and place: the smell of gunpowder, the taste of peaches, the cold of the castle. Through the decade Token of Betrayal covers, de Carteret’s son, Philippe, grows from a boy to a young man, sees history unfold, and learns the difficulties and darker parts of becoming an adult. I’m looking forward to Book Two and the unfolding of Philippe’s life. ~Michal Strutin
