Writing After. . .

By C.V. Lee

Life can interrupt the creative process, from something as simple as a phone call to family commitments, from the unexpected to the obligations of everyday life. Sometimes this hampers the day’s productivity. Other times, the disruption can turn into days, weeks, or even months of stalled writing. Then, when sitting down to write again, it can feel like beginning anew—setting up a schedule and renewing the commitment to write daily, even for just a few minutes, until it becomes a habit once again.

Other times the interruption is an upheaval—an event that more than disrupts, but actually changes the very essence of who we are. When this happens, the creative process can seem like an impossible task.

Over the past three years, I have faced a variety of experiences that have done just that—things that have altered who I am emotionally, spiritually, even physically, leaving me adjusting to a “new normal,” marked by altered plans and revised priorities.

One such event for me is still ongoing. In October, I eagerly anticipated Novel November, determined to complete a women’s fiction novel. The plot was mapped out, the characters drawn, the protagonist’s story arc set. Then days before Halloween, it came—an unexpected medical diagnosis. Cancer. Fortunately it was discovered early and could be eradicated quickly. Despite that, it left me in shock and worried about the future.

With the upcoming treatment looming, I tried to maintain the NovNov schedule. However, the constant apprehension interferred, and I floundered.

Now that I am recovering, I am searching for the magic that will inspire me to write again. Even with the encouragement from a friend, telling me how much he enjoyed my books, and asking when book next one comes out, I am still too overwhelmed to hunker down and put pen to paper.

This time I know it will take more than rebuilding a habit. The past three years have left me changed, and with that comes the need to re-evaluate my stories and how I tell them. For now, I am giving myself grace and time for my body to heal.

If you have advice or tips for reigniting that creative spark after a life-altering event, I would love to hear them. Please share your thoughts in the comments. Your suggestions may help more than just me, but other writers who are navigating this same road.
